The new Polk County jail is big enough to house a little over 1500 inmates but there is plenty of room to expand if the population requires it. And with the way US prison State is growing, I’m sure it will eventually need to be.

Records for Polk County inmates

Iowa’s prison population, including polk county inmates, have experienced substantial growth in recent years. In fact it has been so high that it will not be able to maintain that growth rate, as the State’s facilities simply will not sustain it.

It was estimated that by June 30, 2011 the State’s prison population would be approx. 24% over official capacity. I’m not sure what the official percentage actually is, but anything in excess of capacity seems to be a pretty serious issue to me.

The overcrowding for Polk County inmates appears to be roughly the same for womens facilities as it is for mens . In the coming years there may be a little relief with the addition of some womens capacity in Mitchellville in 2013, and in 2014 an additional mens facility in Fort Madison of 120 beds.
